Elm Park Alpacas

Nestled in the peaceful countryside of Hazelwood South, Gippsland, Elm Park Alpacas is a boutique farm with a big love for animals.

Alpacas

Alpacas are gentle, intelligent animals that belong to the camelid family, which also includes llamas, camels, vicuñas, and guanacos. Originally from South America, alpacas have been domesticated for thousands of years and are now cherished all over the world — including right here in Australia.

Types of Alpacas

There are two distinct breeds of alpaca:

  • Huacaya (pronounced wah-KAI-yah) – the most common type in Australia, with soft, fluffy fleece that resembles sheep’s wool. Huacayas produce no lanolin, which makes their fleece hypoallergenic and easier to clean.

  • Suri (pronounced SOO-ree) – known for their silky, lustrous fleece that hangs in long, wavy locks. Suris often produce finer fibre than huacayas and have a more distinctive appearance.

Alpacas Need Company

Alpacas are true herd animals and should never be kept alone. They rely on companionship for their wellbeing — stress and loneliness can make them seriously unwell. The ideal starting number for a small herd is three alpacas.

Miniature Donkeys

Miniature donkeys are charming, affectionate animals known for their gentle nature and big personalities. Originally from the Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia, these donkeys were first bred to work in harsh, mountainous terrain — but today, they’re adored around the world as friendly companions and farm animals.

What Makes Them “Miniature”?

Miniature donkeys stand at under 91 cm (36 inches) tall at the shoulder. Despite their small size, they’re sturdy, intelligent, and incredibly social animals that form strong bonds with people and other animals.

A Joyful, Gentle Nature

Miniature donkeys are known for their sweet, calm temperaments, making them ideal for families, hobby farms, and even therapy or educational settings. They love attention and often enjoy a scratch or a cuddle — many are happy to follow their humans around the paddock!

Donkeys Need Friends Too

Like alpacas, donkeys are herd animals and should never be kept alone. A lonely donkey is an unhappy donkey. They thrive with a companion (another donkey is best) and are happiest in pairs or small groups.
